Things to do at the Garden Route

The Garden Route offers unique experiences to visitors. The route includes an assortment of ancient forests, exclusive artist communities, retirement estates, modern malls, mountain lodgings and hideaways, beaches, and modern gold courses. The drive along the route is spectacular as it reveals the most stunning landscapes of forested mountains, white sandy beaches, and extensive wetlands.

 Most arriving visitors typically use Knysna as their base of operations or the neighboring Plettenberg Bay that is famous for its sandy beaches. While the stunning scenery is enough to make your trip enjoyable, it is the hidden treasures and gems that are located at the side of the road that are the appeal of the Garden Route. Here are some things to do at the Garden Route:

Whale watching

The coastline on the Garden route is heavenly and is characterized by large numbers of marine species such as seals, dolphins and of course, whales. All you need for whale watching is a quality pair of binoculars and an elevated position that will allow you to spot the gigantic creatures easily. From the right spot, you can spot the whales as they play around in the natural environment. For an up-close look, there are plenty of tour companies that offer trips out to the sea; this is by far one of the most exhilarating encounters of your life.

Go on an elephant walk hiking trails

The Knysna forests are home to large herds of elephants owing to the indigenous trees. There are several hiking trails that can be enjoyed which begin at the Diepwalle Forest Station. The trails offer the rare opportunity to observe elephants in the wild. The trails are color coded so that hikers and trekkers can locate them easily. Aside from the elephant sightings, the trails are also good for exploring nature and for watching a great assortment of bird species.

Go to adventure land

Adventure land offers a range of activities that are suitable for both adults and children. Adventure Land is a unique water park that is set on a stunning natural 24-hectare estate. The park has a total of seven rides that include the rapid tube slide and the two lane speed racer. The park also has a smaller mini super tube and a children’s pool that can accommodate younger visitors.

Attend the Friday Market

The Friday Market is your best chance to enjoy the local delicacies and cuisine’ the market is open on Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm. The market also has live entertainment, body paint artists and jumping castles for the kids.
